The LCBO is focusing on Value for the month of January in what is typically a slow time of year for wine sales. There is a major sale in General List of wines that are being discontinued. Some of these are good steals and for some of them there is a reason they are being discontinued. When you shop the discontinued wines all we can say is 'Buyer Beware'. For great values this weekend look to the first Vintages release of the year aptly called 'Smart Buys.' There are a lot of tremendously good wines in this release for under $20 but Argentina steals the show again with the 2006 Santa Julia Malbec Reserva.

2006 Santa Julia Malbec Reserva

Tasting Note:  This is a 100% Malbec that is hand picked and aged in French oak barrels for 8 months. A big wine at 13.5% alcohol with dark violet and vivid purple colours. A complex nose with typical Malbec aromas of ripe fruits such as figs, plums, blackberries and hints of vanilla, coffee and chocolate. A full wine with rich tannins and a long finish.

Enjoy With:  Argentina is known for their grilled meat and nothing would match better with this wine.

Dry / Sweet:  Dry full red wine.

Terroir / Region:  From a vineyard in Maipu in the heart of Mendoza. Hot dry desert mountain conditions create the ideal region for full red wines.

Producer:  Santa Julia is a reserve range of wines from Familia Zuccardi of Fuzion fame. The grapes are trellised in a unique Pergola called the 'Parral Zuccardi' and are hand picked. Zuccardi wanted Santa Julia Reserva to be a true expression of the Mendoza Terroir.

Availability: Released on Saturday January 9 in Vintages. Only 500 cases available so this is one you should try and get this weekend.
