Wine is all about discovery and there are thousands of unique grape varieties grown around the world. However, it takes some work and a bit of risk taking to spend hard earned money on something you don't know anything about. Besides if it was good would it not be the next Shiraz? The truth is many grape varieties are specifically suited to the climate or soils of particular regions and they many not grow well anywhere else. Here is a unique pick for this weekend.

2004 Mezzacorona Teroldego Riserva

Tasting Note:  Teroldego is a thick dark skinned grape and creates a wine with intense ruby red colour. The wine has complex aromas of ripe fruit, prunes and blackcurrant with a full balanced finish. The wine was aged 12 months in oak barrels and a further 12 months in the bottle for this Riserva.

Enjoy With:  A hearty plate of meat lasagne and a glass of Teroldego would make a perfect winter weekend dinner.

Dry / Sweet:  Dry full red wine.

Terroir / Region:  Teroldego thrives in Trentino in northern Italy. The region is perfect for wine with the warm summer days and the cool evenings creating balance and length in the wines.

Producer:  Mezzacorona is a leading producer of Pinot Grigio. Mezzacorona is the largest winery in Northern Italy. In business for over 100 years, Mezzacorona recently opened a new state of the art winery with gravity flow technology allowing them to make wine on a large scale but maintaining top quality.
