2005 Peter Lehmann Barossa Shiraz
Tasting Note: Deep garnet rim with a dark black centre. Lashings of dark chocolate on the nose. Showing the classic richness of Barossa Shiraz with a superb depth of fruit with fine chalky tannins on the finish. Fruit was fermented on skins for seven days and then matured for 12 months in French and American barrels. This is a big wine at 14.5% alcohol but is so well integrated and structured that you can hardly tell.
Enjoy With: A big wine with the strength to match up with the traditional Superbowl foods; wings, chilli, pizza, philly cheese steak, nachos etc. But if you are feeling a little more adventurous order in some Indian food.
Dry / Sweet: Dry full red wine.
Terroir / Region: Peter Lehmann is one of the Benchmark producers of the Barossa valley in Australia. Peter Lehmann once said that when God created Shiraz, he did so with the Barossa in mind! Shiraz has had a long and glorious history in the Barossa where it has flourished uninterrupted since the 1840's. The Barossa blessedly escaped the scourge of phylloxera, and consequently many of the vineyards remain planted on their own roots, direct descendants of cuttings brought to Australia in the early 1800's from Hermitage in the Rhone Valley. This makes the Barossa the envy of the wine world. The soils and climate of the Barossa are ideal for producing the full flavoured, rich fruited Shiraz wines of great longevity that have made them internationally recognized as Australia's contribution to the great wines of the world.
Producer: Peter Lehmann has always had a love of wine, art and the Barossa valley. The diverse character of the Lehmann wines has inspired them to distinguish each label with one of the many faces of the Queen of Clubs who is symbolic of the brave gamble Peter Lehmann took to build his winery in 1979. The wide range of soils and micro-climates produce a wealth of grape styles, providing Lehmann winemakers with the luxury of being able to select from the known vineyard flavour profile, the grapes which will create the style they are seeking. It is significant that the majority of the vineyards for this Barossa Shiraz are classified as mature, ranging in ages from 20 to over 100 years old. Many are ungrafted and dry grown.
