Rain, Rain go away. Well it could be snow and it might be as the weather gets colder over the weekend. A nice weekend to stay in and warm. But venture out to Vintages for their current release this Saturday which is focused on Southern France and some great values here. However, the best value red in this release is again from Argentina.

2005 Santa Julia Magna

Tasting Note:
Magna is a blend of 50% Cabernet, 40% Malbec and 10% Syrah. The wine is deep red ruby in colour with purple hues. Aromas of black fruit, red cherry and plum mixed with cedar, tobacco, toasted coffee and dust cacao notes. A silky entry with soft and gentle tannins. Wide reach in the mid-palate, with fruity and complex flavours. The great complexity and long finish.

Enjoy With:  Great with any grilled red meats but for me Ribs comes top of mind as the wine will hold up with a spicy sweet BBQ sauce.

Dry / Sweet:  Dry red wine.

Terroir / Region:  The grapes for Magna are selected from specific vineyard sites in Mendoza. The Cabernet and Malbec come for a special vineyard in Maipo and the Syrah comes for Zuccardi's Santa Rosa Vineyard. The grapes are hand picked and sorted to have Magna as the expression of the best of these vineyards.

Producer:  This is the top red wine in the Santa Julia range from Familia Zuccardi. Normally the flagship red for most producers are iconic limited edition wines at very high prices. For Santa Julia the Magna is the top red but still priced for every day enjoyment consistent with the strategy for the range.

Availability: 800 cases released in Vintages Stores on Sat. February 28th.
