Friends!  That is what wine is all about.  One of our favourite wineries is Elderton in the Barossa valley and their Friends series is one of the best values out there.  As the temperatures hit the double digits on the + side, dust off the BBQ and invite some friends over.

2006 Elderton Friends Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Note: A beautifully defined wine with black currant and plum fruit flavours, with an elegantly polished texture.  Finishes with ripe fruit, mocha, vanilla-bean toasted oak and fine grained tannins. The wine is big and full at 14.5% alcohol and was aged for 18 months in new and aged French and American Oak.

Enjoy With:  Great with anything off of the grill and ideal with BBQ lamb chops.

Dry / Sweet:  Dry red wine.

Terroir / Region:  The fruit is sourced from vineyards owned by friends of Elderton under long term contract. 'Friends' just seemed like the perfect name when this range was launched a few years ago. Most of the vineyards are at high Altitude in the Eden Valley ranges of the Barossa.

Producer:  Elderton Wines is a small, family owned and operated winery, situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley. The Elderton vineyard which was planted in 1904 by Samuel Elderton Tolley, was purchased by the Ashmead family in the late 1970's and started producing labelled bottled estate wine from the 1982 harvest. Much of the fame of Elderton is for their Shiraz but they have always had great success with elegant Cabernet Sauvignon.

Availability: Released in Vintages on Saturday February 28, 2009. Lots in stores now. Also try the Friends Shiraz which is a close second in the pick for this weekend.
