2008 Waimea Sauvignon Blanc

$17.95

Fans of the Marlborough region already know that New Zealand makes incredible Sauvignon Blanc. You might not know about its lesser-known neighbour though - so why not pick up a bottle of this lovely wine and discover the difference that terroir can make. Nelson Sauvignon is more elegant and restrained than Marlborough but has plenty of character to stand up to the sturdier foods of fall.

Tasting Note: Zesty and racy with lots of gooseberry, green apple and citrus on the nose. Flinty, mineral complexity comes through on the full-textured palate. Depth, ripeness and concentration is balanced by crisp, refreshing acidity.

Enjoy With: Lighter dishes with bold flavours - seafood, pasta, poultry. Its crisp acidity makes it the perfect complement to salads with vinaigrette dressing.

Style: Dry, fruity white wine.

Terroir / Region: Located at the north end of New Zealand's South Island, Nelson is consistently the sunniest region in the country, with a more temperate climate than that of its better-known neighbour Marlborough. This means that there are plenty of sunshine hours to ripen the fruit and cool evenings to give fresh acidity, but the resulting wines are classical and elegant and have a subtle restraint that's missing in Marlborough.

Producer: Like all Nelson wineries, Waimea Estates is family owned and operated. It has grown quickly in size and stature since 1993, when fruit growers Trevor and Robyn Bolitho, keen to diversify from apples into grape growing and winemaking, planted their first vineyards. As the success of Waimea grew, the orchards shrank, and in 2006 the last apples trees were pulled out. Waimea is accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and operates under the three core principles of environmental soundness, social responsibility and economic viability.

Availability: 500 cases will be officially released Saturday, October 24 in Vintages. But check the LCBO website, since some stores’ shelves are already stocked.
