Tasting Note: The 2008 Caliterra Reserva Chardonnay has a beautifully fruity aroma - pineapple and grapefruit notes mingle perfectly with soft vanilla in the background. The palate is complex yet refreshing, with crisp acidity giving impeccable balance to the concentrated fruit and subtle wood character.
Enjoy With: A wide range of lighter dishes: fish, poultry, pasta, appetizers. It's fresh and crisp, so it won't overwhelm delicate flavours, but its fruit concentration and subtle oak give it the body to stand up to spice and seasoning.
Style: Dry, fruity, lightly oaked white wine.
Terroir / Region: Caliterra is based in Colchagua, but their chardonnay grapes are sourced from estate vineyards in the coastal Casablanca Valley, Chile's answer to Carneros. Long thought to be too cool for grape growing, it is now synonymous with quality white wine. Cool Pacific breezes create huge variation in day and night temperatures, but winters are mild - together these characteristics make for a long, cool growing season perfectly suited to aromatic whites. 2008 was a fantastic year and produced grapes of optimum character and quality.
Producer: Established in 1996 as a partnership between the Robert Mondavi family and Viña Errázuriz, Caliterra's philosophy fuses quality (calida) with land (tierra). They're a young, modern and innovative company that believes in maintaining a passionate friendship with the environment through sustainable viticulture philosophy. As winemaker Sergio Cuadra says, "It's not only about making high-quality wine anymore. It's about making it with careful awareness to protect the natural resources for our grandsons and beyond.”
