2008 Peter Lehmann Layers Red, Australia

$17.95

This is the first vintage of this exciting new wine from Barossa stalwart Peter Lehmann, and it is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Layers of complexity and flavour come from the blending of Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Tempranillo and Carignane - three Barossa classics and two foreign varietals of huge promise.

Tasting Note: Multi-dimensional and complex, Layers is a very harmonious quintet. The colour is deep cherry with aromas of dark plum, chocolate, and earthy black olive. The palate is a soft mouthful of forest fruits with wild bramble undertones and a spicy, stylish finish.

Enjoy With: Easy drinking and approachable, Layers is the perfect wine for chilly fall nights. Enjoy it on its own or with roast beef, grilled sausages, or pasta with rich, tomato-based sauces.

Style:  Dry, fruity, full-bodied red.

Terroir / Region: Barossa is the heart of the Australian wine industry and the most famous region in the country. The wide range of soils and micro-climates allows for an extraordinary diversity of grapes and wine styles. The region has never suffered from phylloxera, so many vineyards still thrive on their own root stocks, distinguishing the Barossa as a wine-growing region with some of the world's oldest vines.

Producer: Peter Lehmann, known as the Baron of Barossa, has been described by a leading Australian wine writer as a "legend in his own lifetime." A descendant of the original German settlers to the region, he is a Barossan through and through. He has long believed the Barossa, with its diversity of terroirs, to be a winemaker's paradise and the best place in Australia to make wine.

Availability: Available now in Vintages. 400 cases were released on November 21. Look for it in the Australia section.
