The wines of the southern Rhône represent some of the best value the wine world has to offer, and they're ideal warming quaffers for chilly winter nights. Almost always a blend of several grapes, the reds are lush, ripe and generous but still have an earthy savouriness. Made from a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, the Cuvée Venus Laurée is the perfect compromise for a crowd that includes both old and new world fans.
Tasting Note: Aromas of cocoa, red licorice and spice dominate the ripe and expressive nose. Medium bodied and juicy on the palate, with generous flavours of plum, berry, mocha and earthy spice. Soft, harmonious tannins ease gently into a smooth, mellow finish.
Enjoy With: Simple foods like roast chicken, pizza and ribs. This is an easy-drinking wine that can match a wide range of dishes.
Style: Dry, medium-bodied red wine.
Terroir / Region: The Cuvée Venus Laurée vineyards are located on the hills of Vaison, a small village on the east side of the southern Rhône Valley, just north of the more famous towns of Gigondas and Vacqueyras. The Mediterranean climate is warm and dry, allowing full ripening of the Grenache and Syrah grapes. Warm, pebbly soils and 30-year-old vines ensure full, fruity, complex flavours.
Producer: Founded in 1924, La Romaine produces wines from Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Ventoux and Vins de Pays Provence. Their approach strikes a balance between old world tradition and new world technique, a balance that is fully expressed in the glass. An ongoing modernization process has been well recognized by the many awards La Romaine has received since 2004.
