2006 Bertani Valpolicella Secco Ripasso, Italy

Coming to you early in time for the holidays.

$16.75

The holiday season calls out for a bottle of something special, and Bertani's Ripasso is the perfect candidate. A blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes, Ripasso is the delicious result of the intersection of Italian thriftiness and ingenuity. It gets its name and its distinctive flavour when simple Valpolicella is "repassed" over the leftovers of the Amarone production. Flavour complexity, structure and aging potential all get a boost.

Tasting Note: A complex and perfumed bouquet of fresh and dried red fruit is accented by hints of spice and nuts. The palate is dry and medium- to full-bodied with a rich fruit flavour that's balanced by a subtle and pleasantly earthy bitterness.

Enjoy With: It’s versatile enough to match a range of foods, but it loves Italian dishes, red meat and aged cheeses.

Style:  Dry, medium- to full-bodied red wine.

Terroir / Region: Valpolicella Valpantena is part of the large Valpolicella region of northern Italy that stretches from Lake Garda in the west to Soave in the east. Valpantena lies in the hills north of Verona, directly east of the Classico region. Slightly cooler than Valpolicella Classico, it nevertheless produces wines of equal quality, and from its earliest days Bertani has been its greatest champion.

Producer: Bertani, which recently celebrated its 150th anniversary, was founded in 1857 by brothers Gaetano and Giovan Battista Bertani. Prosperous wine merchants who believed that quality winemaking held the key to the future, the Bertanis invested in some of the finest vineyards in the province. They've maintained a careful balance between tradition and innovation ever since, and in the 1950s, they were the first producers to make a dry Amarone, today one of Italy’s most famous wines.
