No New Year's Eve is complete without a sparkling wine to toast the occasion. And you don't need to spend a fortune to find something that'll do the job and be tasty as well. Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut Cava is a classic example of Spain's answer to Champagne, and it's available in three formats: a 750 mL bottle, a gift-pack that includes two flute glasses, and for big gatherings, a 1.5 L magnum.

Tasting Note: Medium-bodied, dry, and intensely fresh and fruity, thanks to a high percentage of Paralleda grapes. Bright and citrusy on the palate with subtle, yeasty mineral notes, the fine, creamy mousse carries through to a crisp, elegant and lasting finish.

Enjoy With: Although it's perfect for the midnight toast, you'll want to enjoy it all night long with tapas, young cheeses and seafood.

Style:  Dry, sparkling white wine.

Terroir / Region: Cava, once known as "Champana" until the French said no, is sparkling wine made in "the traditional method" (that is, just like Champagne) in northern Spain. Production is spread across a wide area, but the town of San Sadurni de Noya, just outside Barcelona, where Freixenet is based, is its centre. The region has been known for its wines since the time of the Romans. Freixenet opts for the traditional blend of Paralleda (for finesse), Macabeo (for body) and Xarel-lo (for earthy complexity).

Producer: Freixenet is one of the original producers of Cava - and in many ways, the company's history and success parallels that of Cava in general. Their sparkling wine business was born at the beginning of the 20th century, and the company is named after an estate - La Freixenada - that has been in founder Pedro Ferrer's family since the 1200s. Still family-owned, Freixenet is now the largest exporter of Cava in the world.
