2007 Albert Bichot Pinot Noir "Vieilles Vignes," France

$16.95

Incredible value from a very good producer. If you've discovered the understated pleasures of Burgundian Pinot Noir but don't like its usual price, check out this offering. "Vieilles vignes" means "old vines" (in this case a minimum of 35 years), which translates into a concentrated, complex wine that will outshine most entry-level Burgundy.

Tasting Note: Slightly smoky and spicy on the nose with aromas of dark cherries and raspberries. Lean and focused on the palate, the well-integrated tannins give perfect support and persistence to the expressive fruitiness.

Enjoy With: A terrific food wine, this is fabulous with coq au vin and seared duck breast.

Style: Dry, medium-bodied red wine.

Terroir / Region: Sourced from vineyards throughout Burgundy, in central France, many of the vineyards are the "hautes cotes" or top slopes of the most famous vineyards of Burgundy and share many of their characteristics. Partial aging in second- and third-year oak barrels gives added complexity and structure without masking the delicate fruit and terroir.

Producer: The Bichot family's Burgundian roots go back to the 1300s. Wine producers since 1831, they now own properties throughout Burgundy. Sixth-generation director Albéric Bichot has won a number of winemaking awards since taking over in 1996. He believes that good wine comes from premium fruit grown in healthy soils, and he practices organic viticulture wherever possible.

Availability: 300 cases will be released officially on Saturday, January 9 in Vintages (look in the France/Burgundy section). But check the LCBO website, since some stores' shelves are already stocked.
