The perfect winter warmer, this blend of Tempranillo, Monastrell and Garnacha is a great example of the terrific value coming out of southern Spain today. "Reserva" on the label indicates a wine from a superior vintage that has aged a minimum of three years before entering the market, and it's extremely unusual to see on a wine of this price.
Tasting Note: Like warm sunshine in a bottle, the Castillo de Almansa shows complex aromas of black cherries, licorice, sweet spice and vanilla. It's lush and full on the palate with gentle tannins, soft plummy fruit and a refreshing dash of acidity from the Tempranillo that lingers on the finish.
Enjoy With: This is the ideal match for Spanish tapas or paella, red-sauced pasta and grilled meat.
Style: Dry, medium-bodied red wine.
Terroir / Region: Almansa is a small, recently created DO (Denominacion de Origen) on the Mediterranean side of Castilla la Mancha, the large central plain south of Madrid. The climate is extreme, with very hot summers and bitterly cold winters. Known for its strong, sturdy reds that have traditionally been used for blending, it has emerged of late as a viable source of quality wine in its own right (thanks in part to Bodegas Piqueras).
Producer: Bodegas Piqueras was founded in 1915, and like other producers of the region sold its production for blending until 1961, when its first bottled wines were released. With Juan Pablo Bonete Piqueras at the helm, the family continues to lead the charge in showing the world the potential of the area. That richness of possibility is perfectly symbolized by the Castillo de Almansa on the label, a landmark castle famous for its role in the 12th-century re-conquest of Spain.
