Sunny and 22 degrees on Saturday? Spring seems to have sprung, and what better way to celebrate its arrival than with a bottle of fresh and zesty Sauvignon Blanc whose name means "offspring"? Momo is youthful, urbane and charming. Seriously stylish, this is a wine for good food and great conversation.
Tasting Note: A remarkably gentle Marlborough nose of freshly mown grass, diced green pepper and fresh herbs. The palate is silky and soft with delicate grassiness and subtle tropical fruit and citrus - it's not the typical aggressive fruitbomb. A touch of crisp minerality makes it a very sophisticated food wine.
Enjoy With: Delicious as an aperitif and with all types of seafood and summer salads. Enjoy a glass with the first asparagus of the season!
Style: Dry, fruity, medium-bodied white wine.
Terroir / Region: Located at the northeastern tip of New Zealand's South Island, Marlborough and its Sauvignon Blanc put Kiwi wine on the map - and they continue to set the New World standard. Essentially a large, flat river valley, Marlborough's shallow, stony soils aid drainage and limit fertility, ensuring high-quality wine production. Grapes for the Momo are sourced from the Wairau Valley, which, along with the Awatere Valley, is one of two key Marlborough growing areas.
Producer: Meaning "offspring" in Maori, Momo originally emerged as a second label of New Zealand’s renowned Seresin Estate, but it has more than established an identity of its own. With a philosophy of blending technology and tradition, Momo winemaker Clive Dougall selects sustainably and organically grown grapes from a small number of carefully chosen growers, using minimal winemaking intervention to present wines with honest varietal character and quality.
Availability: 600 cases will be officially released Saturday, April 3 in Vintages. But check the LCBO website, since some stores' shelves are already stocked. Look for it in the New Zealand section.
