Made from organically grown grapes, Terredavino's Barbera d'Asti Biologico is the quintessential Italian food wine. Wine insiders have long known about Barbera's excellent price/quality ratio - now you can find out why it's the everyday wine of Piemonte.
Tasting Note: Youthful and heady with vibrant aromas of cherry, plum, spice and sweet herbs. Dry and freshly fruity on the palate with good body, soft tannins and just the right amount of palate-cleansing acidity.
Enjoy With: An ideal sipper with charcuterie, or match it to herbed chicken dishes and medium-aged cheese.
Style: Dry, medium-bodied red wine.
Terroir / Region: Asti is part of northwestern Italy's cool Piemonte region, which lies at the feet ("pied") of the Alpine mountains ("mont"). Asti sits to the northeast of Barolo and Barbaresco, famous for their Nebbiolo-based wines. In these regions, Barbera is second fiddle, but in Asti, the best vineyards are planted to Barbera, and here the grape truly shines.
Producer: Multi-award-winning Terredavino is based in Barolo and produces a vast range of wines, from the globally famous to the local and obscure, but its focus is squarely on Barbera. The Barbera Biologico is the new product of its organic viticulture program. It's sourced from vineyards in the heart of the Asti zone and growers whose organic farming works in harmony with nature to produce flawless fruit with a minimum of environmental impact.
Availability: 400 cases will be officially released Saturday, April 17 in Vintages. But check the LCBO website, since some stores' shelves are already stocked. Look for it in the Italian section.
