2006 Château Ducla Bordeaux Supérieur, France

$14.95

A perennial LCBO favourite, this blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc is a great example of the value and charm available at the entry level of Bordeaux (in contrast to the other end, where bottles from the famous châteaux can sell for hundreds of dollars each).

Tasting Note: Elegant aromas of red fruit, cedar and sweet toasty spice on the nose. Medium-bodied and dry on the palate, with the careful balance so typical of the region. It's pleasantly fleshy, with velvety tannins and a hint of vanilla and toast from oak aging. Flavours of cherry, blackcurrant and a slight earthiness linger on the finish.

Enjoy With: Serve with roast pork, braised beef shanks and a wide range of aged cheeses.

Style: Dry, medium-bodied red wine.

Terroir / Region: Although many associate Bordeaux with the famous chateaux of the right and left banks of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers (think Margaux, Lafite, Pétrus), lots of great-value wine is made in the large Entre-Deux-Mers region that lies between the rivers. Located in France's southwest, the vineyards are still quite northerly for grape-growing and rely on the tempering influence of the river waters and the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Bordeaux Supérieur is subject to stricter production rules than basic Bordeaux, including lower yields, greater fruit ripeness and longer maturation.

Producer: Ducla's history is long and venerable: one building dates to the 14th century, when it was used as a hunting pavilion by a Scottish nobleman named MacDouglas. Over the centuries the name has evolved into its current form. Owned by the renowned Mau family, it's run by the grandson of Yvon, who founded the empire. Happiest in the vineyard, Jean-Pierre works closely with young winemaker Florence Forgas to make wines that emphasize balance over excessive ripeness. He describes his work as nothing out of the ordinary: "We just provide support and the plant does all the rest."

Availability: 800 cases will be officially released Saturday, May 1, in Vintages. But check the LCBO website, since some stores' shelves are already stocked. Look for it in the French section.
