One of these days the summery weather will return, and you'll want to be ready with a stash of great-value pink wine. Cerasuolo is Abruzzo's name for rosé. Hearty and refreshing, it's made from Abruzzo's best grape variety, Montepulciano, which is not to be confused with the town of the same name in Tuscany.
Tasting Note: An alluring cherry-red colour leads to an intensely fruity perfume of dried cherry, strawberry, orange peel and spring flowers. Dry on the palate with terrific fruit supported by bright acidity, it's fresh, well harmonized and remarkably persistent on the finish.
Enjoy With: Fish soup, pizza, grilled shellfish or veggie quesadillas.
Style: Dry, medium-bodied rosé wine.
Terroir / Region: The fertile, mountainous region of Abruzzo lies on central Italy's Adriatic coastline and has a winemaking history that stretches back centuries. Hillside vineyards, summer heat and solar radiation from the sea are ideal for ripening grapes. The Montepulciano grapes for the Cerasuolo come from hillside vineyards in the province of Chieti, just inland and to the southwest of Pescara.
Producer: The Citra name is rich in tradition. Citra ("below") and ultra ("above") describe the areas into which Abruzzo was divided on 17th-century maps. Long recognized for the incredible value its wines offer, the Consorzio Co-operative Riunitem - the company behind Citra - chose the name to reflect its deep attachment to its regional heritage and its proud and passionate growers. Overseen by award-winning winemaker Romeo Taraborelli, Citra is the single most important producer in Abruzzo.
Availability: 250 cases will be officially released Saturday, May 15 in Vintages. But check the LCBO website, since some stores' shelves are already stocked. Look for it in the Rosé section.
