What better way to celebrate the World Cup and the onset of barbecue season than with a classic South African barbecue (or as they say, braai) wine? Intensely bold, fruity and spicy, it matches perfectly with the flavours of the grill. In a nod to the traditions of France's Rhone Valley, Bellingham adds a splash of Viognier to give a perfumed lift to the Shiraz.
Tasting Note: A bold and expressive wine with aromas of ripe red and black fruit, violets and leathery chocolate. Substantial soft, ripe fruit on the palate, perfectly supported by fine, velvety tannins and seamless oak integration. There’s enough structure here to allow several years of cellaring.
Enjoy With: Ideal for whatever meat you're grilling on the barbecue. It's also perfect on a chilly night with braised lamb shanks or a flavourful beef stew.
Style: Dry, medium- to full-bodied red wine.
Terroir / Region: Bellingham Wines is based in Franschhoek, Afrikaans for "French Corner." The Shiraz is sourced from prime vineyards throughout the Coastal Region, a mix of microclimates that radiate out from the southern city of Cape Town. The area enjoys intense African sunlight tempered by the humidity-killing Cape Doctor wind and the cooling influence of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
Producer: The first vines were planted by French settlers in the Franschhoek Valley more than 350 years ago - the homestead at Bellingham dates to 1693. The 1980s and '90s saw a number of modernizing developments, marking the beginning of Bellingham's "classic new world" philosophy, producing authentic and memorable wines that salute the past while toasting the future.
