2007 Newman's Own Cabernet Sauvignon, California

$17.95

Twenty-eight years ago, Paul Newman mixed up his famous salad dressing and packaged it in recycled wine bottles. Various products followed, and when his wines debuted in 2008, the circle - and the table - was complete. The man might be gone, but his legacy lives on, in the Newman's Own Foundation, which profits with each bottle sold. Why not pick one up this weekend? It not only tastes good - it does good!

Tasting Note: Rich and full-bodied, with notes of cassis, black cherry and spiced vanilla on the nose. Layered and complex, it has a vibrant, lush warmth on the palate, thanks to loads of red and black fruit. Pleasantly chewy tannins give a harmonious balance and a long smooth finish.

Enjoy With: Goes beautifully with a grilled steak on a summer evening and a screening of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Style: Dry, fruity, full-bodied red wine.

Terroir / Region: The fruit for this wine is carefully selected from some of California's best growing regions, including Napa and Sonoma counties to the north of San Francisco, and San Luis Obispo to the south, on the Central Coast. Each region has its own microclimate, but they all benefit from California's mild winters and very cool summers, thanks to their proximity to the cold Pacific Ocean.

Producer: The philanthropy of the late, great Paul Newman is still felt. His company, Newman's Own, continues the charitable work he was so passionate about, and the naturally made wines reflect his love and concern for the environment. The brand is owned by Trinchero Wines, based in Napa, which for 60 years has stayed true to its original philosophy: Offer a great product for a fair price.

Availability: 600 cases will be officially released Saturday, June 26 in Vintages. But check the LCBO website, since some stores' shelves are already stocked. Look for it in the California/USA section.
