Once the summer heat hits, our red wine needs become very simple: we want easygoing, straightforward wines for al fresco dining. Casal Thaulero, a great-value, everyday wine, is the perfect candidate. From a part of Italy better known for its cheap Montepulciano comes this Merlot Cabernet blend that gives similar blends at higher prices a run for their money.
Tasting Note: An appealing bouquet of red fruit, spice and earth, with subtle leather and tobacco notes that carry through on the palate. Very nice fruit expression: it's medium-bodied and well balanced with soft tannins and a surprisingly long, satisfying finish for the price.
Enjoy With: Give it a little chill to freshen it on hot summer nights and serve it with barbecue chicken, gourmet burgers or pizza done on the grill.
Style: Dry, medium-bodied red wine.
Terroir / Region: Long known as a source of bulk blending wines and inexpensive guzzlers (think Montepulciano), Abruzzo has emerged as a major contender in the price/value wars. Located in central-southern Italy on the Adriatic coast, its Terre di Chieti sub-region is becoming known for great-value offerings made from international varietals like Merlot and Cabernet.
Producer: The name of this prestigious winery comes from the noble Thaulero family and the village in which they lived in the 16th century. Late in the 1800s, Duke Giovanni Thaulero, having reclaimed ancestral lands, planted modern vineyards and built a winery that was very advanced for its time. In the early 1960s, local producers created a line of high-quality wines that paid tribute to these pioneers of modern winemaking and called it Casal Thaulero.
