2009 Whitecliff Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand

$15.05

This week's great-value pick, a classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, is the very essence of summer, with its aromatic herbaceousness and zesty tropical fruit. With the clock ticking down to September, pick up a bottle or two to enjoy while soaking up what's left of the glorious summer weather.

Tasting Note: Classic New Zealand Sauvignon from the first sniff of cut grass, asparagus, gooseberry and tropical fruit. Dry and crisp, yet richly fruity on the palate, with layers of passionfruit and guava and a long finish.

Enjoy With: A wonderful accompaniment to asparagus in any form, vegetable antipasto and grilled shellfish.

Style: Dry, medium-bodied, fruity white wine.

Terroir / Region: Located at the northeastern tip of New Zealand's South Island, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc put Kiwi wine on the map - and it continues to set the New World standard. Essentially a large, flat river valley, Marlborough's shallow, stony soils aid drainage and limit fertility. On the eastern side of the island, protected from cold, wet ocean winds, the region enjoys a long, sunny growing season, ideal for the production of high-quality grapes.

Producer: Named after the Whitecliff vineyards that overlook the Dartmoor River, this great-value range of varietal wines provides informal, friendly and approachable (for the palate and the wallet) wines for everyday drinking. As winemaker since 1985, Tony Bish sources grapes from a range of vineyards and sub-regions to ensure the highest possible quality.
