Having established its reputation with Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand is now busy convincing the world that it's just as suited to producing terrific Pinot Noir. Find out what the fuss is about with this great-value wine from Marlborough.
Tasting Note: A brooding nose with loads of dark cherry, earth and spice. The palate is balanced and nuanced, with dark fruits, spice and leather all sitting nicely on a defining seam of refreshing acidity. The package wraps up with fine tannins, a hint of cedar and a long finish. A very approachable wine that will age gracefully for several years.
Enjoy With: An ideal choice for grilled salmon or duck breast, or a roasted root-vegetable salad.
Style: Dry, medium-bodied red wine.
Terroir / Region: Located at the northeastern tip of the South Island, Marlborough put New Zealand wine on the map with its Sauvignon Blanc - and now it's riding the Pinot Noir bandwagon. Essentially a large, flat river valley, Marlborough's shallow, stony soils aid drainage and limit fertility. On the eastern side of the island, protected from cold, wet westerly winds, the region enjoys a long, sunny growing season. The Babich Pinot is a blend of fruit from various parcels throughout the region.
Producer: Babich Wines has grown surely and steadily from its early beginnings to become one of New Zealand’s largest family-owned wineries. Dalmatian (modern-day Croatia) founder Josep Petrov Babich immigrated in 1910 and planted his first vines in 1912; sons Joe Jr and Peter now run the show. Working closely with winemaker Adam Hazeldine, the brothers (and now their children) produce world-class wines that reflect and respect the terroir of the land.
Availability: 364 cases will be released officially on Saturday, August 21 in Vintages. But check the LCBO website, since some stores’ shelves are already stocked. Look for it in the New Zealand section.
